Düsseldorf coach Daniel Thioune criticizes players despite the win

Fortuna Düsseldorf has reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup. Coach Daniel Thioune is happy, but was also annoyed that a player was ripped off.

Fortuna Düsseldorf’s coach Daniel Thioune was thrilled with the victory in the cup thriller at FC St. Pauli – but not with the casual execution of the decisive penalty. “Completely inappropriate, I’m not a fan of it and I don’t think it’s respectful towards the opponent,” Thioune said about Christos Tzolis on ZDF.

The offensive player was the last to score with a so-called “Panenka” in the 4-3 penalty shootout on Tuesday. The Czech Antonin Panenka gently lobbed the ball into the goal in the 1976 European Championship final and has since found imitators again and again.

“Perhaps you shouldn’t scold him”

Thioune said he was “incredibly happy” about the victory. “But not about the manner” of the last penalty. If Tzolis hadn’t scored, he would probably have had “relatively long ears” from him, the coach added.

“Now I have to take it. Then maybe I won’t scold him.” With the win, Fortuna reached the cup semi-finals for the first time in 28 years.
