During a secret visit to Ukraine by Minister Wopke Hoekstra (Foreign Affairs), he spoke with President Volodimir Zelenski about tackling war crimes. The meeting took place at a conference in the Ukrainian city of Lviv.

The visit was kept secret for security reasons. Hoekstra launched a ‘dialogue group’ at the conference. It concerns a group of countries and international organizations that must ensure that war crimes in Ukraine are detected and registered, so that a tribunal can later prosecute. The Netherlands is taking a leading role in the ‘dialogue group’.

“It is very good that there is so much support from the international community to find the truth and justice for Ukraine,” says Hoekstra. “With so much effort and so many good ideas, it is crucial that there is coordination and overview. This dialogue group will play an important and much-needed role in this.”

It is not the first time that Hoekstra is in Ukraine. In the past year he made several visits to the war-torn country. At the end of last month, he visited the United Nations in New York together with the Ukrainian foreign minister Dmitro Kuleba. There, a large majority of UN countries once again spoke out against the Russian invasion.
