The DSV ski jumpers Andreas Wellinger and Pius Paschke missed the hoped-for podium place in the super team competition. The victory went to Slovenia.
In the search for the super team, spectacular flights well over the 200 meter mark could be seen on Friday at the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill in Oberstdorf. The Slovenian duo Timi Zajc and Domen Prevc secured victory well ahead of the competition. Norway took second place, Austria came third. The DSV team clearly missed the podium finish in sixth place.
National coach Stefan Horngacher had nominated Andreas Wellinger, who was the only DSV Adler to compete for a podium place at the Ski Flying World Championships on Kulm in January. And, somewhat surprisingly for ARD ski jumping expert Sven Hannawald, they decided on Pius Paschke as the second starter.
Wellinger flies, Paschke loses
Paschke (206.5m) broke the 200 meter barrier in the first round, but remained below his potential. With a view to the podium, Wellinger now had to deliver. The 28-year-old managed a strong flight to 230.5 meters and was also able to do the telemark and avoid a fall. The joy of the successful sentence made the Upper Bavarians cheer as they ran out. Only Johann Andre Forfang (234.5m) and Stefan Kraft (233m) flew further.
This meant that the DSV team (-25.6 points) was not in the top three, but in sixth place they were only six meters short of bronze. At halftime, Slovenia led with 427.6 points, ahead of Norway (-9.8 points) and Poland (-18.6 points). Austria was in fifth place behind Japan.
Paschke follows up
Paschke got into flying much better in the second jump and followed up. 223.5 meters lit up for the 33-year-old from Upper Bavaria. “There was more rhythm up top,” said Paschke. “II hope that Andi will do something better so that things can move forward.” A signal for Wellinger too, anything is still possible. However, the direct competitors were also able to deliver. The Slovenian Timi Zajc underlined his claim to victory with 233.5 meters. Michael Hayböck (235m) gave Austria further hope.
Strengthen Austria
Wellinger missed the necessary attack on the top places and this time only reached 206.5 meters. In the end, the podium was no longer achievable with 828.5 points. The Upper Bavarian now wants to analyze the flights in peace and do it in the individual on Saturday.hopefully do better.”
Stefan Kraft brought Austria onto the podium. Norway secured second place and Prevc secured victory for Slovenia.
Why only two jumps instead of three?
In the Super Team, two ski jumpers per team compete in three rounds each. Since the qualification was canceled on Thursday due to strong winds, the ski jumpers were only able to complete two training jumps on Friday. The super team competition was reduced from three to two jumps. “The reason for this is the regulations that, for safety reasons, athletes are only allowed to make four jumps in one day when ski flying,” said national coach Stefan Horngacher, explaining the change.
