In 2019 after a crash he was forced to retire in the fifth stage and knee problems forced him to undergo an operation that had closed his season. From 1 January 2020 he moved to Jumbo Visma, in October he is the luxury wingman in the success of the Roglic Tour, then in January of the following year he announces the indefinite stop to take more time for himself. After a 5-month break, he returns to the Tour of Switzerland, and at the Tokyo Games he wins the silver medal in the time trial. What Dumoulin considers the highest point of these complicated years. “In 2020 I went to super training and burn out – writes Dumoulin -, at the end of 2020 and at the beginning of 2021 I was a shadow of myself and I decided to take a break from cycling to think about myself. Then I decided to resume, because the Games were in my head, because I love this world. Since autumn 2020 I have rarely been able to demonstrate my skills. The Olympic silver medal was the best moment. I’m curious to understand that. that the future holds for me, I am very proud of what I have done “.
