“We hope to focus more on suicide, something that plays a big role in society. You don’t hear much about it when it’s not playing in your vicinity. The subject is still a big taboo. We hope to break that. Participants who have such thoughts themselves can participate. We hope they dare to ask for help sooner or know where to go. You don’t have to have suicidal thoughts to participate. You can come along to commemorate someone. You may also be a neighbor or sister of someone with suicidal thoughts. It’s actually for everyone.”
Why is that openness so important?
“People who are suicidal often have depression and are unable to ask for help. Shame plays a big part in this. We want to break the stigma. Suicidal thoughts and feelings are nothing to be ashamed of. It can happen to anyone.”
