In March of this year Richard Freitag ended his active career as a ski jumper. Only a few weeks later, the millions of ski jumping fans in Germany can breathe a sigh of relief. The 30-year-old will remain with the German Ski Association (DSV) in another function in the future.
Like the DSV on Friday officially announcedFreitag could be hired as the new talent selector for the association.
From now on, the two-time team world champion will look after the D/C squad of the German Ski Association and take care of the further development of young German hopefuls.
A new task that Richard Freitag will take on alongside scout Martin Schmitt and which already fills the silver medalist from Pyeongchang with great anticipation.
“Ski jumping was and is my great passion. That’s why I’m really looking forward to being able to pass on my knowledge and experience to future generations,” said Freitag, who announced the end of his active ski jumping career just a few weeks ago.
Friday should optimally promote and supervise DSV youngsters
After his outstanding 2017/2018 season, when Freitag finished the World Cup season in second place, he was no longer able to repeat his previous performances. He finished his last World Cup season only as 59th in the overall World Cup, a year earlier it was only 69th at the end of the season.
Now the former top jumper wants to support the promotion of young talent in the German association.
DSV sports director Horst Hütter was happy about the personnel. In addition to Richard Freitag, a number of other personnel decisions were also made at the so-called “discipline-specific trainers’ retreats for Nordic combined and ski jumping”.
“With this new personnel orientation, we want to ensure optimal support and support for our active players in all cadres. I am confident that we will be able to set new impulses and thus lay the foundations for further positive development in the disciplines of ski jumping and Nordic combined to make it from the base to the Olympic squad,” Hütter was quoted as saying on the association’s website on Friday.
