The German ski jumpers may have missed the first World Cup triple success since 1990, but thanks to Andreas Wellinger they were able to celebrate the next day’s victory.
In Rasnov, Romania, the Olympic champion won ahead of Ziga Jelar from Slovenia and teammate Karl Geiger. The reason for the success was that numerous top nations such as Austria, Slovenia or Norway took their top jumpers out of the World Cup shortly before the World Championships and sent them to training instead.
The German team of national coach Stefan Horngacher was the only team that started with a top cast.
For Wellinger, who had been in trouble for years and jumped 94 and 99 meters, it was the second win of the season in the competition on the normal hill. Markus Eisenbichler, Philipp Raimund and Constantin Schmid in places four to six and Stephan Leyhe in 13th also achieved decent results.
In December 1990, André Kiesewetter, Dieter Thoma and Josef Heumann ensured the last German triple success to date. The extremely strong team result has little meaning for the World Cup, after all the stars around Norway’s Halvor Egner Granerud and Austria’s Stefan Kraft are returning for the World Cup competitions in Planica, Slovenia.
