The dry spell for German ski jumpers is over. Katharina Schmid takes the first podium place. However, another DSV athlete is causing concern.

Katharina Schmid achieved third place at the World Cup in Engelberg, the first podium finish for German ski jumpers in the Olympic winter – in the tenth competition of the season. At the same time there was a moment of shock for Selina Freitag. The vice world champion fell in the second round. At least she was able to leave the run on her own feet.

“I’m fine. I’ve already practiced falling a bit,” said the 24-year-old afterwards. “I just wanted to jump in normally, not do anything special. But then it kept going, and then things like that happen quickly.” Despite the crash, it was still enough for ninth place on Friday.

Schmid, who ultimately placed third, jumped to 127.0 and 134.5 meters. After the first round she was still in fifth place. Agnes Reisch also showed a strong performance and took fourth place.

The competition was won by the Slovenian Nika Prevc, who celebrated her fourth win of the season ahead of the Norwegian Anna Odine Strøm. Nozomi Maruyama from Japan, the World Cup leader, had to struggle with difficult wind conditions and only finished in sixth place.

Last year, the German ski jumpers had already achieved four victories and nine podium places after ten competitions this season. Things are not going so well in the current season so far.

The next competitions for Schmid and her teammates are at the turn of the year at the “Tournee light” in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf.
