Drunk Polish man must be rescued from the IJ twice in 24 hours

A drunk Polish man (50) was saved from drowning twice in 24 hours in the Amsterdam IJ. Last night emergency services had to take action to get the man out of the water after he jumped into it himself. Tonight it happened again.

After a report last night, officers found a man in the water. They rushed to the man in a small boat and kept his head above water until the ambulance arrived. He was taken to a hospital with hypothermia symptoms.

It didn’t stop him from jumping back into the water tonight. At around 7.45 pm emergency services were called again because a person had fallen into the water.

A skipper of ferry 65 sailed from the central station across the IJ to Buiksloterweg in Noord. When he saw a drowning man almost going under, he threw a life preserver at the victim. Once on dry land it turned out to be the same Polish man as the night before.

The man appeared mentally confused and was under the influence of alcohol. He was again taken away by an ambulance.
