Drunk driver crashes into tree, child occupant is injured

A 33-year-old man from Heerhugowaard lost control just after a bend on the Slootweg (N240) and subsequently crashed into a tree. The driver appeared to be driving under the influence, a police spokesperson said. A child who was also in the car was injured in the accident.

Police could not confirm whether the child and the man are related. “But it appears to be a father and his daughter,” said a police spokesperson.

The driver lost control of the car around 2:15 p.m. The collision caused the engine block to fly out of the car and land in the middle of the road.

Resisting arrest

The child was taken to hospital by ambulance after the accident. The police then wanted to arrest the driver, but he refused to cooperate. Despite his resistance, several officers managed to tackle the man to the ground and arrest him. It later turned out that he was driving under the influence. He was also taken to hospital.

The road between Slootdorp and Hippolytushoef is temporarily closed in both directions. The police are investigating how the accident could have happened.
