Drunk driver Andijk wreaks havoc, despite intervention by a press photographer

A 26-year-old drunk driver from Enkhuizen caused a trail of destruction in Andijk last night. Several people had to jump to the side and bushes had to pay the price. Press photographer Ramon Vegelien tried to stop the driver with his car: his car may be a total loss. No injuries were reported and the woman was arrested.

After an earlier collision in Andijk, Ramon was talking on Sunday evening when he saw a car lurching past. Wrong thing, he knew immediately. “It was almost overly bad the way she drove. Snaking through bushes. She was going through a dangerous intersection at 50 miles an hour where the right has right of way. It wasn’t normal.”

Ramon doesn’t hesitate for a moment and quickly drives after the car. In an attempt to stop her, he pulls his car in front of hers just as she turns. But instead of ending her ride, a major collision ensues. The motorist continues her journey and moments later crashes into a tree on Generaal de Wetlaan, without being injured.

It is a small miracle that there are no further casualties. “Several people had to pull over. She really drove like a man possessed”, Ramon saw. “I would put my car right in front of it next time. You try to prevent a lot of injury to people. I have also jumped into the water to save someone. You just do that.” His car had to be towed away and a repair company is assessing the damage to his car today. “He may be a total loss.”

From the path

Police confirm that the 26-year-old woman has been arrested. She had indeed drunk too much alcohol and her driver’s license was confiscated. Blood tests must show how much she has drunk. Ramon saw the woman after she had driven into the tree a little further on. “I wanted to have a hearty word with her, but managed to restrain myself. It also made little sense, I think. She was pretty off the track.”
