BrusselsDimitri Strobbe, from the board of directors of concert hall AB and the management committee at Brussels Mobility, had to look twice yesterday when he was at the town hall in Brussels. None other than Chad Smith, drummer with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, suddenly stood in front of him.
“Yesterday I was at the town hall to follow the Ommegangstoet”, says Strobbe. “When I spotted someone who looked very familiar to me. I went to him with a friend. I wasn’t sure who it was at first, so I asked if he was a DJ. He answered negatively, but said he drummed. It wasn’t until he mentioned the word ‘red’ a few times that a light came on: it was Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers!”
“We had a short chat and a selfie created. I thought their performance at Rock Werchter was cancelled, but Chad assured us that they will actually play on Sunday. He is a very approachable and jovial man, who doesn’t mind people asking him for a photo. Fortunately, it didn’t bother him that we didn’t recognize him at first,” Strobbe laughs.
“I’m not a die-hard fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers myself, but I do like their music. I am also on the board of directors of the Ancienne Belgique, so I hope to be able to sign him for our concert hall one day.” Did Chad Smith enjoy the Ommegangstoet? “He didn’t say anything about that, but he looked satisfied,” says Strobbe.
