Drought continues: tomorrow’s rain is a drop in the ocean

The month of July goes in the books as the seventh sunniest ever in North Holland, but according to weatherman Jan Visser, despite the drought and heat wave, there was no sign of a remarkably warm month. “The real heat only lasted two days and we had quite a few cold nights.” Will the month of August bring some rain and cooling or will we face another heat wave?

Not only was it tropical warm on some days, there was also very little rainfall this month. According to our weather forecaster, July is in the top 5 of the driest July months ever. “Of course it is very dry and that is very annoying for nature and the agricultural sector. You can also see it in the water level in the IJsselmeer and Markermeer.”

Rijkswaterstaat has tried to raise the water level, but has not succeeded. There is simply not enough water flowing in via the IJssel. The buffer is too small.

That is not unique, says Visser. “But what you have seen in recent years is always that spring drought and that continues into the summer. Then you really get problems, such as salinization [toename zoutgehalte in water of bodem, red.]. That is a really big problem for agriculture. Rijkswaterstaat is trying to solve this by allowing the rivers to reach the water through other channels.”

Weather

Tomorrow there will be some rain, but according to Visser it is just a drop in the ocean: “After that it will be dry again for a few days.” A temperature of 18 to 21 degrees is expected.

Tuesday it will remain dry and it will be around 25 degrees. On Wednesday, the temperature will even rise to 28 to 29 degrees, but there will be no heat wave next week. According to Visser, it can still be 25 degrees on Thursday, but precipitation may fall. On Friday it will be 21 degrees less warm and there is also a chance of rain that day.
