How to pass the driving license exam and what to do if you fail the theoretical or practical test

After having attended the lessons and having prepared properly on the topics of the program (from the rules of the highway code to safe driving) it is possible to take thedriving license test, which consists of two tests: one theoretical and one practical. All candidates hope to pass both, but what happens if they come failed the driving license exam? How many mistakes can be made? Let’s find out.

Driving license exam, rules

Until 31 December 2010 thetheoretical exam for the obtaining a driving license it was divided into ten parts. Each part consisted of 3 questionsfor a total of 30 questionsand it was possible to commit no more than 4 errors (the answers not given were considered incorrect). The answers could be all true, two true and one false, two false and one true or all three false.

Subsequently, from 1 January 2011 a new type of exam came into force: 40 questions (no longer divided into blocks), 30 minutes to carry out the test. Even in this case they could be committed maximum 4 errors (answers not given were also counted as errors).

From 20 December 2021 the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility has ordered – only for A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE licenses – the reduction of the number of questions from 40 to 30, of the time available to take the test (30 to 20 minutes) and del maximum number of errors (from 4 to 3).

Theory driving test, how many mistakes can you make?

To achieve the driving licenses of categories A1, A2, A, B1, B And BEit is necessary to first support thetheory exam. There theory test is computerized: they are submitted to the candidate 30 quizzes to test your knowledge of signs, speed limits, priorities, safety regulations and all other topics included in the exam programme.

During the exam, the candidate, at the station set up with a touchscreen PCyou will have to select the on the screen letter V for a statement considered true or F for a proposition believed to be false. As mentioned, you have at your disposal, to answer all questions, 20 minutes. It is possible to commit to the maximum 3 errors.

During the test it is not permitted to keep cell phones and smartphones activated, consult external sources, communicate with other candidates, leave your workstation (if not authorized), turn off the PC, disconnect the smart card given to take the exam and, obviously, use radio and transceiver devices.

AM theory driving license exam, how many mistakes can you make?

From 1 December 2014 also thetheory exam for the AM driving licence it is computerized: the candidate has 25 minutes to answer a questionnaire containing 30 questions. You can make no more than 3 mistakes.

Driving license exam, how many mistakes can be made in practice

Upon passing the theory exam comes the pink slip was released (it is possible to take the practical driving license exam no earlier than one month from the date of issue).

There practical test for the B1, B, BE and B96 driving licence it has a minimum duration of 25 minutes: in this time the examiner evaluates the candidate’s skills (safe driving, manoeuvres, vehicle control, behavior in traffic).

There practical test for the AM driving licence it lasts 25 minutes. It is divided into two parts. The first is carried out in an area closed to traffic: the candidate must carry out a series of maneuvers (slalom, figure eight, passage through a narrow corridor and braking). The second is the road test.

There practical test for the A1, A2 and A driving licence (which lasts 30 minutes) is divided into four phases. In an area closed to traffic: the first test aims to ascertain the ability to prepare for safe driving, the second consists of balance tests at reduced speed and passage in a narrow corridor, the third consists of balance tests, obstacle overcoming and braking. The fourth test is driving on the road.

There practical test of driving license C, C1, D, D1, C1E, CE, D1E, DE is divided into three phases: verification of the driver’s ability to prepare for safe driving, ability to carry out particular maneuvers and behavior in traffic (the type of vehicle varies for each type of licence).

For all types of license there is no real one maximum number of errors that can be committed for Don’t fail the practical exam. It is necessary to always keep in mind the rules of the road, to drive safely (especially in traffic), and avoid serious errors as:

  • forgetting to adjust the mirrors (and not using them during manoeuvres);
  • do not wear a seat belt;
  • do not use arrows;
  • do not apply the handbrake;
  • answering a phone call and using your smartphone while driving in general;
  • not respecting priorities and speed limits;
  • Don’t stop at the stop sign.

What to do if you fail the theory exam

If you come failed the theory exam it is necessary to repeat the test. You can do it after at least 30 days (within six months) and you only have one second attempt. If you fail, you must submit a new application.

What to do if you fail the practical exam

In case of failed the practical test it is possible to repeat it – even in this case only once – after a distance of a month and a day (and in any case within the validity period of the pink sheet). The advice therefore, obviously, is to practice as much as possible before taking the exam and to correct while driving the mistakes that were made and which led to the failure.

What to do in case of double failure in the practical exam

In the event of a double failure in the practical exam, it is possible to ask for the carry-over from the theory exam (so you don’t have to take it again). You will then have another six months of pink slip to make 2 more attempts.
