shieldA 26-year-old driver of a delivery van was questioned Friday evening about the traffic aggression that resulted in the fatal accident on the Turnhoutsebaan in Schilde. The man was allowed to dispose of after his interrogation. A 67-year-old driver was killed in the accident.
The accident happened around 7:15 pm on the Turnhoutsebaan near the Klein Waterstraat. The van deviated from its track, drove over a traffic island, first rammed into a lighting pole and then collided with a De Lijn bus. The 67-year-old driver from Sint-Job-in-‘t-Goor could no longer be helped. He died on the spot.
A witness had seen that 500 meters before the accident, near the Lukoil gas station, the driver of the van got into an argument with the driver of another van.
Spokeswoman Kato Belmans of the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office confirms this traffic aggression: “The accident was preceded by a discussion between the 67-year-old driver and a 26-year-old driver of another van. The two men blamed each other for driving too slow. They then started to rush each other and overtake each other until one of those maneuvers failed and the fatal collision happened.”
The Voorkempen police questioned the 26-year-old driver of the other van. He was not brought before him and was allowed to go home afterwards.
