In the vehicle that was being chased by the police through Tongeren and Riemst, an underage passenger – a 9-year-old girl – was in the back seat. Teams from the Tongeren-Herstappe and Bilzen-Hoeselt-Riemst police zones arrested the driver last night after a major manhunt.
On Wednesday evening around 10.30 pm, the twenty-something passed an ANPR camera with his car on the Maastrichtersteenweg in Tongeren. That resulted in a hit, because the license plate was signaled as stolen. When a police patrol wanted to make a check, the car drove away and a chase was started. The Tongeren-Herstappe and Bilzen-Hoeselt-Riemst police zones were assisted by the air support service of the federal police during the pursuit.
The crazy ride went through Millen, Genoelselderen, Herderen and Membruggen. On the Rijckerstraat near the Rode Kruislaan in Membruggen (Riemst), the vehicle flew off the runway into a canal. The occupants were unharmed.
Daughter in the back seat
A woman was sitting in the passenger seat, while the driver’s 9-year-old daughter turned out to be sitting in the back seat. In the end, only the 28-year-old motorist, who ran off, was arrested. He is still in a police cell during the investigation into armed rebellion against the police. The man was not under the influence of alcohol, but did pass a positive drug test.
It had previously been reported that three suspects had been arrested for a car theft, but that turned out to be incorrect. The number plate of the car was reported stolen.
The Limburg public prosecutor’s office finally took a final decision on Thursday about what will happen to the man. He is summoned through the summary proceedings. He will therefore have to appear before the criminal court in Tongeren.
