TremeloA serious traffic accident happened on the Tremelobaan on Saturday morning. A 69-year-old moped rider was killed. The 21-year-old driver of the vehicle that hit the moped rider took both a positive saliva test and a positive alcohol test after the accident.
The accident happened around 10 a.m. Saturday. On the Tremelobaan, on the border of Keerbergen and Tremelo, there was a serious collision between a vehicle and a scooter. Both the 21-year-old motorist and the 69-year-old moped rider were driving on the Tremelobaan in the direction of Keerbergen. The man in his twenties, who drove a dark-colored Volkswagen, drove into the back of the moped rider, of which the 69-year-old driver lost control of the steering wheel and fell from his moped with a hard blow. The Tremelobaan was closed in both directions for several hours and the Leuven public prosecutor’s office appointed a traffic expert and a law doctor to investigate the accident. A white tent was set up around the victim.
“The 69-year-old man on the moped did not survive the traffic accident,” said public prosecutor Sarah Callewaert. After the accident, attempts were made in vain to resuscitate the sixty-year-old, but the victim died on the spot from his injuries. “The 21-year-old driver of the Volkswagen hit the moped rider from behind, causing him to fall down on the track with a hard blow. The police arrived on the scene and the man in his twenties breathed positive after the accident and took a positive saliva test. He was thus under the influence of alcohol and drugs during the accident. It is not known whether exaggerated speed was involved.”
The Tremelobaan was reopened to all traffic around 2 p.m.
