Many people will have noticed that Dries Roelvink and supermarket chain Jumbo have joined forces. There are currently meatballs in the refrigerator that he has attached his name to. What does such a marketing stunt actually yield? Is it a tip or a real mega amount?

Party balls

Dries lights up The 538 Morning a tip of the veil. “It cannot be dragged on according to Jumbo. It cannot be dragged on. It keeps getting refilled and I also get a lot of messages from people: ‘Gosh, I was at Jumbo in Zeewolde and then they were gone.’ Then it sometimes takes one or two days before they are there again.”

He continues: “You have the party balls, those little things, and normal sized trays of two. Those weigh an ounce and a half I believe. It’s going really well.”

Couple of dimes

How much does Dries earn with this? “Look, of course you can never mention exact amounts, but when my manager said: ‘We get a few dimes per tray’, at first I thought: that’s not much, you know. But if you continue to count on 700 stores… Just imagine that each Jumbo sells five trays per day.”

Radio sidekick Rick Romijn: “That’s 3,500 bins.”

Presenter Tim Klijn: “Is a few dimes 50 cents or something?”

Rick: “No, 20 cents.”

30 or 40 cents

No, a little more, says Dries. “Ah, I know a lot. Say 30 or 40 cents.”

Rick: “40 cents…”

Tim: “That puts you at 1,500 euros a day.”

Dries: “Yes, that is per week…”

Fellow sidekick Niels van Baarlen: “About ten backs.”

Tim: “And how long are you going to sell those balls at the Jumbo?”

Dries: “I hope they will stay put for about 25 years. Hahaha.”

Rick: “That means you never have to sing again! So this is a win-win situation for everyone!”

ANWB advertising

Many people can also remember the ANWB commercial with Dries, in his yellow swimming trunks. He says about this in the new Privé: “It earned me 70,000 euros at the time. For two different commercials. And that was an awful lot of money for me at the time, which I could really use.”

“And I did, but then I thought I was very rich and didn’t have to do anything anymore. With some savings there was 100,000 euros in my account. That is different now.”
