Drents Museum sympathizes with Mauritshuis: ‘It is a drama’

The Drents Museum disapproves of the climate action at the Girl with a Pearl Earring in the Mauritshuis. “It is a drama. We hope that these actions will end soon,” the museum said.

Climate activists glued their heads to the famous painting by Johannes Vermeer, which is protected with glass this afternoon.

Karin Wijlen of the Drents Museum says she hopes these actions will blow over soon. “We sympathize greatly with the Mauritshuis.”

Wijlen does not want to say whether the Drents Museum is taking measures against a possible action by climate activists. She does indicate that the museum’s masterpieces are not currently in the museum.

Furthermore, the Drents Museum does not want to say much about the action, because they now “get a large stage”.

The worldwide actions against museums are carried out by the Just Stop Oil action group. They want to indicate that the use of oil must be stopped. They focus on museums, because they are financially supported by oil companies.

The Drents Museum also regularly receives donations from NAM. The museum recently received a yeast worth half a million euros for the renovation of the museum entrance. The museum has accepted the gift because, according to museum director Harry Tupan, the costs for the renovation of the entrance must come from public money.

He also said at the time that he was concerned about the climate and he understands the criticism.
