Drenthe week: more than 100,000 passengers at Eelde and carnival in Drenthe

The Drenthe Safety Region (VRD) is reporting fireworks throwers and can you light the wood stove in a responsible manner? Here you can read an overview of the most important news from last week.

But first, police unions are calling for stricter controls on gun ownership. They make this request in response to the fatal shooting in Weiteveen. The suspect in the double murder did not have a permit for the weapon used. “If you want the police to also check for illegal weapons, then you really have to give the police more capacity,” says Albert Springer of the Dutch Police Union.

108,000 travelers flew to or from Groningen Airport Eelde in 2023. This means that the number of passengers has increased by a quarter compared to the previous year, but the airport wants even more. “The demand is still so high. And I really expect the demand to increase even further,” says director Meiltje de Groot.

One in three households lit a fireplace or stove last year, more than a year earlier. Nice to reduce the energy bill, but heating also has bad consequences. According to briquette farmer Bob Zuidersma, you can prevent this. “I am convinced that you can burn wood with ease. As long as you ensure that the moisture percentage is low and that you have small pieces of wood.”

The VRD has filed a report against the rioters who threw heavy fireworks at the fire brigade during the farmers’ protests last Monday. Tractor tires, agricultural plastic and straw bales, among other things, were dumped on the road and set on fire. Corps from Meppel and Ruinerwold came to extinguish the flames.

The Carnival weekend has started again in Drenthe. This is also the case in Weiteveen, which was shocked a few weeks ago by the double murder of two residents of the village. “We very much sympathize with everyone, but we also quickly came to the conclusion that the parade and carnival should continue as normal,” says Erik Blaauw of the carnival association in the village.”
