Drenthe Week: More cultural outings and Meppel’s office transforms into a hotel

Storks have to look for a new ‘home’ and Tuinland employees go to work with a smile again. Below you can read an overview of the most important news in our province.

The Netherlands has emerged from a mild economic recession again and this is partly reflected in the fact that we spend a lot of money on culture and recreation, also in Drenthe. “I think we are catching up after corona. This was not possible for a few years, and now it is again,” says a theater visitor.

The storks that share a nest near Deurze every year have to find a new home. Staatsbosbeheer has removed the pole with the nest. According to this organization, a support pole of the nest was rotten and the nest was demolished for safety reasons.

In recent years, hotels have mainly disappeared in our province, but one has been added in Meppel. An old office building is being transformed into a hotel and plans to open its doors soon. “Everything has to be finished before the summer,” says manager Stefan Scheurwater.

Where a year ago Tuinland employees still spoke of a culture of fear, nowadays they go to work with a smile. “There are new rules of conduct, there are new confidential counselors. And most importantly: there is a new board,” says reporter Hjalmar Guit.

The war in Ukraine started two years ago and volunteers in Haulerwijk are still busy packing aid packages every day. “When you speak to the refugees who come to the Netherlands, you have to roll up your sleeves,” says Harrie Boerhof of the Friese Rijders.
