As a token of appreciation, the province has had a special medal designed for veterans. This was presented today, during the twelfth edition of the Drenthe Veterans Day.
There are about 2,900 veterans in Drenthe. They participated in peacekeeping or peace enforcement missions and observation missions. As a thank you for their efforts, the province has come up with the medal.
“We have had various conversations with the Drenthe Veterans about the most appropriate way in which we can do justice to their commitment,” responds King’s Commissioner Jetta Klijnsma. “I am pleased that we can give the veterans a beautiful and tangible Drents tribute with this medal. So that they know that we find their work very valuable.”
There are three symbols on the token. These are the Drop of the veterans monument in Assen, the white carnation and ‘the Zwaardshede in V-shape’, which stands for veteran, peace and security. The white carnation is the national symbol of recognition for veterans.
All veterans in Drenthe will receive a letter in the coming period, in which they can indicate whether they want to receive the medal.
