Drenthe Toen podcast: The disaster year in Coevorden part 3, the recapture of the fortress

With Ineke den Hollander we are outside Het Arsenaal van Coevorden. Before explaining the heroic role of Meijndert van der Thijnen, she explains what life was like for the Coevorden residents under the bishop: “They had to pay taxes, they were billeted from Munster soldiers. Mattresses were even requisitioned for soldiers who were housed in the castle. And they had to supply wood for the repair of the fortress, all at his own expense, of course. There is a story that Rolde had to supply fifty men, plus material and food, and also oats for the horses, to be here in Coevorden working to restore the fortress.”

Meijndert van der Thijnen does not intend to work for the bishop. In fact, he has devised a plan to reclaim the fortress city from the bishop.
