Drenthe Toen podcast: Battle of Ane and the ‘penitential monastery’ that stood before Assen

The bishop of Utrecht met an ignominious death with Ane, as well as many knights, squires and so on. The Drenths murdered the highest priest (the bishop). Visscher: “That was the worst thing you could do. So there will be revenge. That’s for sure.” After the revenge came, in short, satisfaction. In the form of a monastery. A penitential monastery, which we know as the Maria in Campis monastery in Assen. But it started in Holthone, a hamlet in Overijssel. At least, that’s what Visscher says.

Before the monastery in Assen came, there was first a monastery in Holthone, a hamlet in the municipality of Hardenberg. Visscher, a former lawyer, researcher and secretary of the Battle of Ane Commemoration Association, is firmly convinced: “I’m sure, because that’s the only place that hasn’t been archaeologically investigated yet. That’s why I’m now coming out with my story , because I hope that additional research will be done. So far, searches have been made everywhere and have not been found anywhere.”

You can hear more about Holthone, the Maria convent in Campis in Assen and other answered and unanswered questions in the conversation with Wim Visscher in Drenthe Toen.
