Drenthe politicians jump into the ice-cold water for the new year

More than thirty Drenthe politicians jumped into the Baggelhuizerplas near Assen this afternoon for a New Year’s dive. They did this because of a motion that was adopted in the Provincial Council last month.

The motion, an initiative of the Sterk Lokaal Drenthe party, called on all factions to participate in a New Year’s dive. The party called it “good for members of Parliament and deputies to keep moving”.

Various members of Parliament and also employees of the province had registered. From the Board of Provincial Executive, Henk Jumelet, CDA deputy for sports, among others, participated. When he said yes to the plan, he didn’t expect it to freeze. “But that shouldn’t spoil the fun. We have shown that we are united and that it is fun with the province.”

King’s Commissioner Jetta Klijnsma said in December that she would not go into the water herself. “It’s cool that so many people jumped in. It’s also a beautiful picture to see.” With the dive, according to Klijnsma, they herald a new year in which the province shows that it can “govern Drenthe together”. “Then this is such a nice kick-off.”

This is what the ‘provincial New Year’s dive’ looked like this afternoon:
