Drenthe also submits a claim to ‘The Hague’ for the consequences of gas extraction

Following Groningen, the province of Drenthe will also demand money from ‘The Hague’ for the consequences of years of gas extraction. It must be clear within 14 days how much money is involved.

The people of Groningen announced today that they are demanding thirty billion euros from the government. That money must go into a fund to ‘help the province recover socially and economically’, reports RTV North. In addition, there must be an unlimited budget for the repair and strengthening operation in the earthquake area.

Drenthe will also soon be filing a claim. This is confirmed by deputy Tjisse Stelpstra (Christian Union). How much money Drenthe wants and what exactly the claim will look like is still the question. “We want to come up with news within 14 days,” says Stelpstra. “We do this as a province in collaboration with the municipalities that are also affected by gas extraction.”

Recently, the Institute for Mining Damage Groningen (IMG) indicated that it wanted to set up the claims handling in Groningen and Drenthe more ‘generous’. The IMG is responsible for claims handling in both provinces. This generous claims settlement would cost between 6 and 10 billion euros.

That is – as far as the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe are concerned – not enough. They believe that the government has a debt of honor and want to see this paid off through funds.
