Drenthe again surprised by snowfall: ‘Motorists must pay close attention’

Drenthe is again surprised by snowfall. The KNMI has issued a code yellow due to slippery conditions until 10 a.m. this morning. The weather institute initially warned of wet snow, but the snow remains in several places in the Northern Netherlands.

“It is also somewhat surprising for us,” says Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson Christiaan Kooistra. “We are currently salting and plowing. Every now and then ruts may occur, so motorists should pay close attention. It can be slippery.”

While it is drizzling and about four degrees in the rest of the Netherlands, there is another layer of snow in Drenthe and Groningen this morning. About one to three centimeters of snow may fall there this morning, the KNMI says.

Particular attention must be paid on the A28. “On the A28 between Hoogeveen and just above Assen, the road surface temperature is currently below zero degrees. Then there is a real risk of slippery conditions. Spreading has been done, but it takes a while before it has broken in.”

The number of incidents ‘is not too bad’, says Kooistra. “People adapt their driving style well. That’s the great thing about snow, people see it and then drive more slowly.”

The slipperiness will disappear again during the morning, says the KNMI.
