Drenten: no financial support from the province for the new FC Emmen stadium

The province must support FC Emmen in building a new stadium, according to several Drenthe political parties. But the inhabitants of Drenthe are not keen on that.

Seven out of ten Drenthe thinks that the province should not set aside money for the construction of a new stadium. 15 percent are in favour. This is evident from the provisional results of the Kieskompas, which has been completed by almost 15,000 Drenthes.

VVD, BoerBurgerBeweging, CDA, Forum for Democracy, PvdA, PVV and Sterk Lokaal Drenthe are in favor of financial support for the construction of the stadium. But the majority of these parties do not agree.

Of the people who have indicated that they will vote for one of the above parties in the provincial elections, two thirds think that no provincial money should go to a new stadium to be built for FC Emmen.

The Oude Meerdijk, the stadium where FC Emmen now plays football, is outdated and in need of replacement. The municipality of Emmen is having research carried out into what is possible. It is being examined whether a new Emmen stadium in combination with a sports and exercise campus is feasible.

There is also little enthusiasm for the plan among young people. Not even two out of ten young people aged 18 to 34 want to contribute to the stadium of FC Emmen.

The fact that about two-thirds of the parties’ possible voters are against does not mean that the rest are in favour. There are also many voters who have no opinion on it. There is the least support among voters who say they vote for ChristenUnie and GroenLinks. Less than one in ten voters are in favor of those parties.

In that respect, there is the most support from the people who say they will vote for the CDA, Forum for Democracy, Strong Local Drenthe or the VVD. Of these four parties, a quarter of the voters believe that the province should contribute. So they agree with their party’s position.

Among the people who do not yet know who they are voting for – and that is about a third of the people who have completed the Kieskompas – between 10 and 20 percent think it is good if the province contributes. Three-quarters think not.
