FC St. Pauli and Holstein Kiel broke up goalless in a tired northern derby. The Hamburg second division soccer team remains unbeaten at home this season. But this statistic does not cause any great leaps of joy in the neighborhood.
After only one win from the last twelve games, coach Timo Schultz’ team has to prepare for a long fight to stay in the league. If the Wednesday games in the Bundesliga lower house go really badly for the Hanseatic League, they could even slip down to 17th place in the relegation zone.
The performance against Kiel, which was closer to winning three points in the second half, gave little encouragement that St. Pauli can survive the relegation battle without winter reinforcements. It was one of the weakest home games of the neighborhood club in this series.
Both teams tried hard but lacked depth in the game
It was 1:1 after the first 45 minutes at the Millerntor Stadium. However, not by goals, but by significant chances. Thrilling scenes in the penalty area were therefore in short supply in the football temple on what is supposedly the most sinful mile in the world. Both teams looked for their salvation on the offensive. Up to the opposing penalty area, it looked quite respectable at times for both St. Pauli and KSV.
Attempts to get behind the respective defense mostly failed. In short: the game of the northern rivals lacked depth.
Holtby awards for Kiel, Metcalfe for St. Pauli
However, two goals could have been scored – if they didn’t have to. First, Lewis Holtby gave up the lead for Kiel in his former adopted country. Midfielder Eric Smith saved the shot of the former HSV professional in the 35th minute for his already beaten goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj on the line.
Shortly thereafter, Connor Metcalfe had the 1-0 for Hamburg on the foot on the other side. However, the Australian was unable to overcome keeper Tim Schreiber from a promising final position (42nd).
Vasilj saves Kiezkicker from falling behind
If the level of football in the game was manageable before the change of sides, it even decreased after half-time. The tough argument was a little reminiscent of the desperate attempts of so many children in the neighboring Winterdom to finally hit a can when throwing a can. It took a whopping 21 minutes for one of the 20 field players to hit a ball correctly at the end.
His name is Patrick Erras, he gets his pay packet from the Kieler Sportvereinigung Holstein von 1900 eV and his header after a Holtby corner failed at Vasilj, who made a brilliant save. The goalkeeper was challenged again 180 seconds later by a left-footed shot by Fabian Reese.
St. Pauli too despondent and harmless in attack
And what were the people in front of the ball catcher actually doing? Too much wrong! St. Pauli’s appearance was marked by a noticeable uncertainty and the deficits in the offensive game that had been known for many weeks. In addition, there was questionable body language in the final phase. In the last few minutes, the Hamburgers looked as if they would only watch the final whistle. In any case, the home side did not show courage and determination.
Because Holstein didn’t take any more risks either, the score remained 0-0, with which the “Storks” can undoubtedly live a little better.
