Newport/HeuleThe emergency services pulled a car with two occupants out of the water on Saturday night along the Noorderhaven bank in Nieuwpoort. The vehicle had to be lifted onto dry land with a large crane. For the driver, according to our information a 28-year-old man from Heule and his girlfriend could no longer help.
The emergency services received a report around 10:30 p.m. that a car was in the canal near the Noorderhaven bank. Several police forces rushed to the spot to locate the vehicle. The vehicle was eventually found by divers. Hours later, the wreckage was recovered from the water. However, for the two occupants, a couple, all help came too late. They were already dead. They had been missing since Friday and probably ended up in the water shortly afterwards. What they did in Nieuwpoort and exactly how the accident happened is not yet entirely clear.
According to our information, the driver is a 28-year-old man from Heule. The man had been a fervent supporter of Club Brugge for many years. At the supporters club where he was affiliated, the disappointment is great. “He was a really good guest,” said the chairman. “He had been a member for six years with a regular group of friends. Those guys really bonded together. It’s hard to comprehend what happened.”
