A holiday on the Greek island of Rhodes has turned into a tragedy for two Belgian tourists. “During a ride with a rented quad bike, they collided head-on with a truck,” the Greek police confirmed to HLN. Video footage shows how both vehicles caught fire after the crash. The Belgian driver (33) died in the crash, his girlfriend (29) was hospitalized in life-threatening condition.

The accident happened around 3 p.m. on Friday on a road between Tsairi and Rhodes airport. “The Belgian driver (33) lost control of the wheel, as a result of which he collided head-on with a light truck,” a police officer confirms to HLN. The driver’s girlfriend (29) was a passenger on the quad. “It was a rented quad,” said the police. “Such vehicles are not easy to drive. The Belgian ended up on the other government section and collided head-on with a light truck.”
The truck they crashed into was loaded with construction materials. There were three workers on board. Both vehicles immediately caught fire due to the violent impact. This can also be seen on video footage made by a witness to the accident.
The Belgian and his girlfriend were taken to hospital, but help came too late for the 33-year-old driver. He is deceased. His girlfriend is seriously injured, has numerous fractures and, according to Greek media, is fighting for her life in the hospital.
The three occupants of the truck were also injured and had to be taken to hospital, but none of them are in life-threatening condition. Rhodes Police is investigating the exact causes and circumstances of the traffic accident.
