Drake on criticism of his new album: “It’s ok if you don’t get it yet”

Drake’s new album HONESTLY, NEVERMIND, which the US rapper surprisingly released last week, has caused mixed feelings among fans and critics. The work, which showcases Drake’s new love for dance music, has already been the target of various memes and derisive comments on social media. Now the musician himself has responded to the harsh criticism, claiming that many people just don’t understand the album yet.

Is Drake ahead of his time?

Dealing with negative criticism of one’s own artistic work is not easy, which is why artists develop their own coping strategies. While some practice self-reflection, others put on blinders or seek blame outside. Drake seems at least to have little sympathy for the mixed response to his seventh studio album, on which he – with the exception of the last song on the record – largely avoids rap. In his Instagram story, the rapper briefly commented on this and put forward an interesting (but widespread in the music world) thesis: The fans are simply not ready for the new sound. You can literally hear him say:

“It’s ok if you don’t understand yet. That’s our job. We’re just waiting for you to understand. We got it a long time ago. On to the next project. My goodness!”

A few disappointed fans previously took to Twitter to express their opinions about HONESTLY, NEVERMIND. Here is a selection of critical (and humorous) comments on the album.

Radio host calls new Drake album ‘elevator music’

One who seems to speak to the soul of many critics is The Breakfast Club co-host Charlamagne Tha God. The latter could not hold back his opinion during a review of the album and described the work among other things as elevator and hotel lobby music. In some Twitter comments, this perception is shared.

“I have nothing against the vibes, the vibes for me are the vibes that you hear when you are in a luxury hotel in Beverly Hills (…) This is lobby and elevator music. Those are the vibes of sitting in the SLS hotel lobby enjoying a few drinks on a leather couch in the dim lights (…) I’ll never listen to the album again, but when it’s on, when I’m in the lobby of a luxury hotel sitting, I’m not mad about it.

Rappers J.Cole and Lil Yachty, on the other hand, gave positive feedback, publicly praising HONESTLY, NEVERMIND. On Apple Music, Drake already set a new streaming record with the album. The record was released along with the music video for the song “Falling Back” on June 17, 2022. Listen to the stream of the album here:
