Dr. Ignacio Matías Golian (MN 134145), Otolaryngologist Surgeon, specialist in Functional and Aesthetic Nasal Surgery and professor of Anatomy at the UBA School of Medicine, is a recognized professional dedicated to functional surgery to improve the respiratory quality of their patients.
– Dr. Golian, what led you to choose this specialty?
During my academic training I was observing that day by day my interest in the surgical area grew, more specifically in the head and neck sector. To this was added my dedication and subsequent teaching of Anatomy in the Medicine career at the University of Buenos Aires. My topics of special interest are all those related to nasal and laryngeal pathologies, among others. These are points to be dealt with in a particular way, which each one deserves its individual development.
– What kind of inconveniences do the most common otorhinolaryngological conditions and injuries that require surgery bring?
In the case of nasal septal deviations, these generate respiratory difficulties that affect the quality of life of patients. On the other hand, small lesions of the vocal cords can modify the voice, but with the intervention of an otolaryngologist together with a speech therapist it can be resolved without problems. Functional surgical procedures of the nose are also important since they allow us to recover physiological breathing and with it, a better quality of life.
How do you deal with the stress that long hours in the operating room undoubtedly cause and the responsibility that comes with it?
Clearing the mind and combating stress is essential for every surgeon, regardless of their specialty. Some colleagues play sports, others have habits related to meditation, in my case, I really like painting. I dedicate time to painting, especially in oil with the palette knife technique. Landscapes are my favourites. Art allows moments of great tranquility and balance.
– What are your future projects in the medium and long term?
In principle, I have my attention focused on the formation of courses with a learning orientation in the matter and to create a work laboratory in order to promote the learning curve in the training of professional doctors.
