The English guitarist Wilko Johnson is dead. This was announced by his group The Wilko Johnson Band on their social media channels. He passed away at home on Monday 21 November. Johnson played guitar with Dr. Feelgood, as an actor he was also seen in “Game of Thrones”. He was 75 years old.
“This is the announcement we never intended to make and it is with a very heavy heart that we write this on behalf of Wilko’s family and the band,” the statement said. “Thank you for respecting the privacy of Wilko’s family at this very sad time, and thank you everyone for being such a tremendous support throughout Wilko’s incredible life.”
Wilko Johnson was battling cancer
A cause of death was not announced. Johnson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013. In 2014 he announced that he was cancer-free after a complex operation.
Johnson co-founded the English pub rock band Dr. Feelgood and shaped their sound with his percussive fingerstyle guitar playing. dr Feelgood are considered to be the precursors of punk. After the third album “Sneakin’ Suspicion” Johnson left the band. He then played with Solid Senders and The Blockheads, among others, before forming his own group, The Wilko Johnson Band.
As an actor, he starred as the executioner Ilyn Payne in the first two seasons of Game of Thrones. After his cancer diagnosis, however, he left the fantasy series.
