US insurer United Health sells Brazil business – high burden

NEW YORK – Unitedhealth Group (UnitedHealth), the largest health insurance company in the United States, is selling its Brazil business to a private investor. The deal will impact net income by around $7 billion, the company said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday. According to the information, the sale is expected to be completed in the first half of 2024. The shares rose slightly in premarket US trading.

The VDIK car association is calling for further support for electric cars

BERLIN – The Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (VDIK) has called on the federal government to further promote electric cars. “With the loss of e-car funding, the general conditions for electric cars will unfortunately deteriorate in the coming year,” said association president Reinhard Zirpel of the German Press Agency on Friday. He therefore sees the danger that electric cars will lose ground in competition with combustion engines. “2024 will be a year of uncertainty for electromobility in Germany.”

R+V boss: Climate change could make insurance unaffordable

ROUNDUP: Gas storage 90.8 percent full – Netzagentur: ‘Well equipped’

BONN/BERLIN – Germany is entering the new year with abundant natural gas storage facilities. The overall level was 90.8 percent on Thursday morning, according to data from the European gas storage association GIE on Friday. Exactly a year earlier it was 88.8 percent. To put it into perspective: If the storage tanks are full, the amount of gas stored corresponds approximately to the consumption of two to three average cold winter months. A level of 100 percent was recorded on the morning of November 5th.

Hapag-Lloyd continues to avoid the Suez Canal

HAMBURG – The Suez Canal, an important artery for world trade, remains off-limits to ships belonging to the Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd following attacks by Yemeni Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. The crisis team decided on Friday to continue redirecting freighters traveling from Asia to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, a Hapag-Lloyd spokesman told the German Press Agency. “We will make the next assessment with further decisions on January 2nd.”
