At a wedding in Düsseldorf, several dozen guests contracted carbon monoxide poisoning.
The wedding party initially alerted the emergency services on Saturday evening because of someone’s acute circulatory problems, the fire brigade said on Sunday.
When the emergency services’ carbon monoxide alarm went off, the emergency services asked the approximately 150 to 200 wedding guests to leave the basement of the otherwise empty office building and called on other emergency services.
34 people were taken to the hospital by the ambulance service. In addition, around 20 people went to hospitals independently for examinations. carbon monoxide is an odourless, colorless and tasteless gas that is formed during certain combustion processes and acts as a strong respiratory poison in high concentrations.
At the celebration, a gas heater and two power generators were in operation on or in the building, said a spokesman for the fire brigade.
Because all devices were switched off before the fire brigade arrived and carried to a parking lot, the exact cause of the incident was unclear.
