Dozens of mayors celebrate 75 years of the Zuiderzee Museum: “Have a common bond”

Dozens of mayors and aldermen came to the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen today to celebrate its 75th anniversary. The museum already had an official opening last Thursday, but now also opened its doors to the public.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary, the mayors of municipalities bordering the Zuiderzee each brought their own delicacy, which is typical for their region.

“We brought a Spakenburg heart with us,” says alderman Peter van Asselt. “That is still very much used by the population when there is a birth or a birthday, then a name is set up. And actually this is also a birthday, the 75th of the Zuiderzee Museum.”

“We brought a piece of sugar with us, to carry a piece of culture to the other side of the water,” says Rembout van Iddekinge, alderman of the municipality of Sudwest-Fryslan.

“Good feeling”

“Many people who have lived on the Zuiderzee have a common bond because of the history they share. They have a lot with this place and therefore a common bond, that’s what it’s all about today. That gives a very good feeling,” says Marian van Kampen, chairman of the Zuiderzee Museum. “And when it’s your birthday you invite your friends and these are the friends of the museum.”
