Dozens of floats, large and small, will travel through the streets of Winkel today. The annual Flower Parade Shop expects tens of thousands of visitors again in the village. A lot of work has been done on the floats in recent months and the past few days have been entirely devoted to the parade to pin, staple and stick around one million dahlias. “That people will enjoy themselves, that is the most important thing.”
“First it’s two evenings a week, then three and eventually you’re busy with the cars seven days a week.” Paul Beers from the construction group ‘JJ de Sioux’ in Winkel looks with pride at what will be the largest float of the flower parade. At least twenty people are in the warehouse preparing flowers for the car. Young and old are busy sorting, stapling and pasting the flowers.
‘Spook-tacular’
The theme of the car is Halloween, says Beers. “Entitled ‘Spooktacular’.” The car is so large that it does not fit in the warehouse in one piece. “There’s a lot going on. We have moving parts, a lot of music and extras. We really do it for the audience and when it’s dry we’re just happy.”
The flower parade in Winkel has been around for 117 years. Every fourth Sunday of the month the village is dedicated to the parade. The parade with the floats starts at 2:00 PM, but there is a fair and a market before that. Moreover, the village is decorated with flags and flowers.
Nice weather
For Bas Hageman of the board of Flower Parade Shop it’s already a party. He visits all twenty construction groups to see how everyone is progressing. “The quality is very good. The cars tie in with themes of the past year: climate change, farmers’ protests at Rutte’s tower and we also see many animals passing by. The most important thing is that people come and that we entertain them. There Let’s go first. With nice weather!”
