Double cleansing as a solution to skin problems

Especially in South Korea, but also in other parts of the world, the popular double cleansing is used to clean the skin of the face.

As the name suggests, double cleansing refers to a two-part cleansing where the face is cleansed with both an oil- and water-based cleanser.

– The biggest problem with facial cleansing is doing it with the wrong products and technique. Then, in the worst case, you will get the skin in worse condition. On the other hand, small changes make the skin stronger, says the skin care expert and founder of Twistbe Kati Partanen.

Partanen is sure of one thing: double cleansing is suitable for everyone. For young and aging skin, acne and combination skin.

First the oil

Double cleaning starts with oil cleaning. The oil-based product is applied to a dry face with clean hands. The instructions may seem strange, but the oil does not spread if the face is moistened with water.

When applied in circular motions, the oil melts make-up and soaks up pollution and sunscreen. Oil cleansing can also help get rid of blackheads, as the rolling motion helps the pores to release sebum. In addition, the movement works as a facial massage.

Although the oil cleans, it does not disturb the natural balance of the skin. Kati Partanen reminds that the skin has its own important microbiome, the balance of which can be disturbed by too strong cleaning.

There are differences in oil cleansers, and you should look at your own skin care routine to find the right one. An emulsifying oil cleaner is often the choice of those who value speed and simplicity. The emulsifying putter becomes milky and it is rinsed with water.

You can also choose a cleaner that is 100% oil as a cleaning agent. The product is wiped off the face with a muslin cloth or cotton pads.

Twistbe’s co-founder and skin care expert Veera Brückler advises that an effective cleaning method for easily blocked skin is to combine an emulsifying cleansing balm and a konjac sponge to clean the face.

You can skip the second step

In the second stage of double cleaning, a water-based cleaning agent is used. According to Partanen and Brückler, it is easy to choose a cleaning agent that is too strong and foamy, which can be recognized by the tightening of the skin.

– That’s when you know you’ve washed with too strong a substance and the skin’s own fat has been washed away too much, in which case it can take up to 16 hours for the skin to recover, experts point out.

Luckily, the skin lets you know if it’s not feeling well. Pimples, greasiness and surface dryness are warning signs, in which case you should try changing the cleaning method or substance. However, too strong a cleaning routine is not always the sole cause of impurities or skin problems.

In South Korea, the most popular water-soluble products are gels and foams. However, Partanen and Brückler recommend a cleansing milk that does not foam as easily. Even a gentle cleansing gel with a low pH value leaves the skin moisturized.

They also remind us that not everyone needs a double cleanse. For some, only oil cleaning is enough. There is no harm in double cleansing, but for some, the second step is unnecessary.

According to the duo, there are no other corrections. If you want your skin to feel well, you should spend at least two minutes on thorough cleaning.

In the morning, only water is enough to clean your face, so double cleansing should be saved for the evening.
