After the failure of a total of six German bids for the games since 1992, Weikert said he had received a lot of support from other countries during his talks in China over the past two weeks. “Everyone is happy that we are celebrating an international comeback.”
With regard to the Winter Games in Milan and Cortina 2026, Schimmelpfennig said: “We wish that then without pandemic restrictions, they will be the games we love again.” Weikert, who spoke of “functional games” in Beijing with “collateral damage in terms of human rights”, added: “The future of the Olympic Games looks bright now that they have been awarded in democratic countries.”
