Doping allegation: Boston winner Kipyokei suspended

The series of doping affairs in Kenyan running does not stop.

Diana Kipyokei, winner of the 2021 Boston Marathon, and Betty Lempus were provisionally banned on Friday by the independent integrity committee of the world athletics association, World Athletics, for violating anti-doping regulations.

Both athletes had been found to have degradation products of the steroid triamcinolone acetonide, with Kipyokei in a sample taken after their victory in Boston. Both athletes are also accused of manipulating their doping samples and obstructing the AIU investigation by providing false information. The French Anti-Doping Agency (AFLD) initially acquitted Kipyokei and Lempus.

Kenyan marathon runner Philemon Kacheran, training partner of running star Eliud Kipchoge, was banned for three years on Monday for an anti-doping offence. Most recently, Kenyan athletes had repeatedly tested positive and been banned. The national association has taken a number of measures to deal with the problems.
