The Länsi-Uusimaa rescue service reported on Wednesday about an incident where a backup power source that was being charged on a bed in a single-family house in Lohjalai caught fire.

However, no major damage was caused by this, even if the ingredients were for a bigger accident. Iltalehti had reported on the incident.

Incidents have happened before. The leading expert of the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency Seppo Niemen according to this, these are mostly individual cases. Niemi commented on the case For Helsingin Sanomat.

– The chemicals in these are very flammable, Niemi tells HS.

Expert in the energy industry Tuukka Heikkilä had also made an update to the X message service (formerly Twitter) about the case.

If you don’t see the embed, you can watch it from here.

– Battery-powered portable devices should be charged on a hard surface, such as a table, Heikkilä says in his message.

According to Heikkilä, with a soft charging pad, the heat of the battery is more easily dissipated elsewhere. In addition to the increased risk of fire, this also leads to a shorter lifespan of the device.

A special sign of danger is when the device is swollen and the device heats up while charging it. In this case, a short circuit leading to a fire can form in the device, if the protective structures of the device have failed due to swelling.

Fires most often start when the device is charging, which is why it is not recommended to leave the device overcharged without supervision.
