Don’t know if I was “on the radar”

New national player Anton Stach from Mainz 05 apparently never saw a real chance of a professional career at his former club VfL Wolfsburg.

“We had a good team at Wolfsburg II back then, I felt good there and played well too. Unfortunately, the connection to the professionals fell a bit short. To be honest, I don’t know if I was even on the radar,” he said 23-year-old in an interview with the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung”.

Stach played in the “Wolves” regional league team until 2020 and then switched to FSV Mainz 05 via SpVgg Greuther Fürth. In March, the defensive midfielder made his first international appearance for Germany in a 2-0 win against Israel. On Friday evening (8:30 p.m. / DAZN) he returns to Wolfsburg for the first time with Mainz in the Bundesliga.

“I think I was allowed to train upstairs at least once,” said Stach about his time at VfL. “The two years in Wolfsburg were nevertheless very important for my career. And that it would continue so well after that, very few could have expected that.”
