Don’t forget to breathe: the plot
15-year-old Klemen lives with his older brother Peter, and his single mother, in a small provincial village. The daily routine, made up of days on the tennis court and swimming in the river with her beloved brother, suddenly breaks down due to the love at first sight between Peter and the beautiful Sonja. Which turns into a passionate love story that unleashes conflicting impulses and reckless behaviors in Klemen.
Because the tormented Klemen begins to feel irresistible feeling of love-hate towards the girl, who is taking her brother away for him. He hates its role as undermining the family balance, but it is not indifferent to her bursting femininity. Despite this he undertakes to devise a plan to separate them. Will the brothers be able to overcome this very complicated phase of life?
A coming of age tender and charming
Set in the White Carnelian, Southeastern Slovenia, Don’t forget to breathe he tackles important issues such as growth and first loves with intelligence and the complications of a very difficult age. At the Rome Film Fest, the director from Trieste in his third test declared that he chose the specific stage of adolescence precisely because of its characteristics of torment, and to mix it with autobiographical elements.
Immersion in an almost wild and uncontaminated nature thus becomes the perfect mirror of emotions that crowd the minds of the three young protagonists. Inspired, as an atmosphere, by the cult of Luca Guadagnino Call Me By Your Name, the film plunges into a sultry summer, sweaty and complicit (unaware) of Klemen’s amorous torment. Between hormonal explosions and fiery sunsets, the three boys discover what it means to become adults. For better or for worse.
