Model and influencer Donny Roelvink, like his brother Dave, is becoming increasingly interested in Islam. Donny’s accident earlier this year when he was run over by a Hummer has contributed to the feeling that there must be ‘something higher’. The 24-year-old son of Dries Roelvink tells this in detail in conversation with FunX DJ Fernando Halman in his YouTube series RealTalks.
The Roelvink scion recorded a fitness video with friends in June and was run over by a Hummer. He ended up in the hospital with five broken ribs and a collapsed lung. He had to recover for weeks. The conversation with Halman is the first time that Roelvink talks extensively about the accident.
“I have always felt things,” says Roelvink. ,,I believe in something higher and have often immersed myself in believing. I have a friend who is Muslim, I participated in Ramadan and I went to the mosque.” Earlier this week, his brother Dave also said that he has found peace in Islam after a period full of alcohol and drugs. His younger brother firmly believes that his grandmother watched over him during and after the accident. “I have a tattoo of her on my arm, there is now a scar through her head. I do believe she has been watching over me. If I had been 20 kilos lighter, I would have been dead by now.”

Do not Cry
The first day after the accident, Roelvink was in hospital and, in his own words, he only looked outside. “I wasn’t screaming or crying, I wasn’t angry. I just lay there, turned in on myself, and looked out. I thought: how am I going to tell my parents about this?” Only when the whole family was at his bedside a day later did the emotions come. “Suddenly everything came out, what had happened. I cried all day when my friends and family were at my bedside.”
The experience only made him stronger in the end; two weeks later he was back in the gym.
