There is news about the “Lando” project. Donald Glover is now creating a feature film instead of a series.
The Star Wars character Lando Calrissian should actually have a separate Disney Plus series dedicated to him. At least that was the plan since it was announced three years ago. But now there are new developments in production. “Lando” is being developed into a feature film.
The author Stephen Glover announced this in the podcast “Pablo Torre Finds Out” on September 14th. Together with his brother Donald Glover, who portrayed the fictional character in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” in 2018, he took over the development of the script after filmmaker Justin Simien left the project. The brothers shaped it into a feature film. However, the project has been on hold since the writers and actors strikes that began in Hollywood in May of this year, says the screenwriter in the podcast.
Before the brothers took on the project, Donald Glover spoke to the US magazine GQ in April 2023. “I’m not interested in doing something that’s a waste of my time or just a paycheck. “I would much rather spend time with people I enjoy,” says the actor about a possible implementation. “It just has to be the right thing to do, and I think it might be. Lando is definitely someone I would like to hang out with. We’re talking about it right now. That’s all I can say.”
The character of Lando has been part of the Star Wars universe for more than 40 years. However, the space smuggler was portrayed by Billy Dee Williams in “The Empire Strikes Back” (1980), “Return of the Jedi” (1983) and in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” (2019). Before Donald Glover took on the role for “Solo” in 2018, he met his predecessor. In 2017, he told The Hollywood Reporter that he remembered vividly describing his plan to bring the character to life to Williams. “He just let me go on and on and finally I asked him: So, what do you think? And he said: Yeah, I don’t know what this is all about. Just be charming,” the actor recalls.
Donald Glover was last heard as the voice of the Prowler in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The animated film was released in June 2023. In March 2023, he also developed the horror thriller series “Swarm of Bees” together with Janine Nabers, in which singer Billie Eilish also took on a role.
