After the draw against Hoffenheim, Dominik Kohr comments on his harsh response to Max Moerstedt – and publicly apologizes.

Dominik Kohr asked for forgiveness the day after his infamous red record. The FSV Mainz 05 player explained on Instagram: “In my head I just wanted to prevent a pass from Max yesterday. That was my focus, that was my intention, I didn’t want to hit Max.”

According to video evidence, Kohr was shown a red card in the 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim on Friday evening for a serious foul against TSG professional Max Moerstedt. With his ninth dismissal, he set an inglorious record in the Bundesliga, moving past Jens Nowotny and Luiz Gustavo in his 316th game.

He didn’t really notice the scene on the field – it was only the television pictures that showed him the extent of it: “I’m shocked myself. It could have turned out differently. Max Moerstedt, please excuse me – I’m relieved and glad that nothing more happened to you and that you were able to continue playing,” continued Kohr.

“Defending uncompromisingly is part of my footballing DNA,” wrote the 31-year-old. “But of course I’m also a person who never goes into a duel with the intention of injuring someone or with the willingness to simply accept that my opponent will be harmed if the ball is blocked.” He also wanted to apologize to his team and the fans.
