Dominant Valthermond has a chance of promotion with minimal victory

After Valthermond had to leave the championship to WKE’16 by one point, it was allowed to report for promotion to the first division in the play-offs. The first task of the team from Drenthe was to deal with VENO. The visitors from Vollenhove in Overijssel were defeated 1-0.

In the next round, Valthermond will play against Helpman. The competitor defeated first division Rolder Boys, which is therefore relegated to the second division.

Valthermond clearly had the better of the game in the first half. It was no great surprise that it was 0-0 at halftime. ,,We had a few chances in the first half, but you have to score because then they also have to take more initiative”, said Kenny Koning about the first half. The initiative was indeed hard to find at VENO. The visitors collapsed. That made it difficult for Valthermond to create excellent opportunities. Logically, the danger that Valthermond was able to create mainly came from crosses and standard situations.

Pinpricks

Corner kicks in particular caused some excitement in the penalty area. Jesper de Graaf, for example, had a header after 18 minutes from a fine cross from Mark van den Berg. However, the stakes went wide. Shortly afterwards, VENO’s only real opportunity came in the first half. However, the attempt from the corner kick ended up closer to the corner flag than to the goal. Except for small pinpricks, Valthermond had to wait until the injury time of the first company before the really big chances came. First, Jens Bulle hit the keeper through a beautiful through ball from Mark van den Berg. A few seconds later, Milan Draijer almost promoted a cross with a volley to a goal. VENO keeper Jos Bril could barely tap the ball over the crossbar.

Wonderful attack

The game image hardly changed in the second half. This changed after Jens Bulle managed to head in the 1-0 after an hour of play. It will have surprised few spectators that this happened from a corner kick. This goal was a blessing for both Valthermond and the match image. The visitors were forced to make the game more. This resulted in more opportunities for both sides. First for Valthermond who seemed to quickly switch to a second goal. Jorn Draijer, however, shot just wide after a beautiful attack over several discs.

Painful block

Erik Jan Veerbeek got an even bigger chance after good preparatory work by Jesper de Graaf. Veerbeek didn’t hit the ball full enough so that VENO could stay alive. The visitors seemed eager to take advantage of the home team’s lack of sharpness in the front. First, a rock-hard shot was blocked by Jens Bulle in an unorthodox and very painful way. Ten minutes before the end, Joost Schrik, Valthermond’s goalkeeper coach who had to defend the goal because keeper Noah Sahetapy was on vacation, had to really take action for the first time. He made a good save on a bet by Tim in ‘t Veld. After this, Valthermond did not get into major problems anymore.

,,All in all a deserved victory” concluded Kenny Koning. ,,A ball can always go wrong, but in my opinion victory has never really been in danger”. So the Groningen Helpman awaits next Thursday. A well-known opponent for Valthermond. Both have beaten each other once this season.
