Dolf van der Weij, one of the founders of Hillig Meer Nature Cemetery in Eext, has passed away. Van der Weij was involved in the establishment of the first natural cemetery in Drenthe from 2003.
Van der Weij died last Monday at the age of 86. For his efforts for the cemetery, he was decorated as a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2016. In the same year, he and his wife Annetje Braat handed over the baton to their successors.
The Hillig Meer natural cemetery opened in 2013 and is part of the Heidehof estate, which covers more than a hundred hectares. Van der Weij was also involved in the development of the estate for many years.
