A dog breeder from Deurne, who left his animals in their own poop for years and did not provide them with clean water, has been jailed for nine months. The 38-year-old man also receives a professional ban for six years and nine months. He will also face another nine months in prison if he commits another crime within the next ten years. He is also not allowed to keep animals during that period.
The breeder had to appear in court in Zwolle on Monday. Checks and inspections from February 2018 to May 2023 revealed that there was a lot wrong with the breeder. ‘Large-scale animal suffering’, the judge called it.
Poor condition
The dogs had no dry and clean shelter, lay in their own feces and were denied clean drinking water. Many animals were in poor condition, were thin and many dogs had matted coats.
The man has done nothing to improve the situation, despite the many checks and administrative measures imposed. During checks by the police and the National Animal Protection Inspectorate (LID), the man was repeatedly reminded that he needed a professional diploma for commercial breeding and trading in dogs. His administration was also not in order. Time and time again nothing changed.
Cooperate with inspections
During the entire ten-year probationary period, the man must cooperate with home visits by the LID, the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) and the police.
The nine-month sentence is lower than the Public Prosecution Service’s demand. The Public Prosecution Service wanted the man to go to jail for a year.
